It has been a little over a year since Quantum moved into a new building and CEO Gary Diamond sees the move as strong evidence of the continued success of the ongoing upgrade process that has been a part of the company since it opened in 2010.
“In the very competitive recycling industry, one of our key differentiators is continual improvement,” says Diamond. “At Quantum, we believe strongly in kaizen, the Japanese term for continuous business improvement, and the involvement of all employees—from the CEO to production line workers—in processes that upgrade production and eliminate waste.”
Recent Improvements at Quantum
In the year following the move to their new 125,000 sq. ft. facility, Quantum has made more improvements in key areas. Diamond summarizes the changes as improving efficiency through lowering costs, improving consistency and cleanliness of output quality, and reducing health and safety risks.
Specifically, Quantum has:
- Installed a state-of-the-art shredding line with more machines to improve cost efficiency and separation quality.
- Hired a full-time Director of IT Systems and Development to aid in the system for capturing and reporting real time data.
- Introduced new triage areas to further refine the products they process and/or sell.
- Introduced a dedicated processing line for flat panel displays as this category of recycling continues to grow as a percentage of incoming volume.
- Introduced mechanical conveyors at the front end of the sorting process to improve efficiency and reduce health and safety risks.
- Improved the lighting to upgrade the general atmosphere.
- Upgraded the number of electric battery-operated forklifts.
- Continued to put resources into optimizing warehouse flow and layout.
What Should I Look for in a Recycler?
E-waste is the fastest growing type of waste in North American landfills. According to the United Nations University, the amount of e-waste discarded annually represents the weight of nine Great Pyramids of Giza or 4,500 Eiffel Towers, so it makes sense to choose a reputable company for your recycling needs that is doing the most that they can to improve the environment. Quantum, with their commitment to continuous improvement through the kaizen model, is a company with a demonstrated plan to help the environment.
Quantum is also third party audited annually and fully accredited. This includes the R2 standard, an international electronics recycling standard focused on data security, environmental compliance and occupational health and safety. Additionally, their ISO 14001 and OHSAS 1800 accreditations provide peace of mind to customers who want to know that goals and objectives for occupational health and safety/environmental risks are being set and actively managed. Ultimately this makes Quantum a more ethical business.
Contact Quantum today to discuss your recycling needs large or small, and feel better about the choice you’ve made for the future of the planet.
