M\u00eame s&rsquo;ils ne g\u00e9n\u00e8rent pas autant d&rsquo;\u00e9missions de GES que les g\u00e9ants du carbone tels que les services publics, les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques sont une source de pollution pr\u00e9occupante et contribuent de plus en plus au r\u00e9chauffement de la plan\u00e8te. Dans les ann\u00e9es \u00e0 venir, il est probable que l&rsquo;impact des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques s&rsquo;accentuera consid\u00e9rablement, \u00e0 moins que nous n&rsquo;agissions rapidement pour inverser la tendance. Voici un examen plus approfondi du lien entre les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques et le changement climatique, et de ce que nous pourrions faire pour y rem\u00e9dier.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Comment les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques contribuent-ils au changement climatique ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques d\u00e9signent tous les appareils \u00e9lectroniques mis au rebut, dot\u00e9s de piles ou de prises, tels que les ordinateurs ou les t\u00e9l\u00e9phones portables. Lorsque ces appareils sont mis au rebut de mani\u00e8re inappropri\u00e9e, ils finissent souvent dans des d\u00e9charges, devenant ainsi une source importante d&rsquo;\u00e9missions de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre. Les produits chimiques toxiques tels que les m\u00e9taux lourds s&rsquo;infiltrent dans le sol et l&rsquo;eau, devenant ainsi une source directe de pollution. Lorsque les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques sont br\u00fbl\u00e9s, les produits chimiques lib\u00e9r\u00e9s polluent l&rsquo;air.<\/p>\n<p>Les r\u00e9frig\u00e9rants utilis\u00e9s dans les \u00e9quipements d&rsquo;\u00e9change de temp\u00e9rature (tels que les syst\u00e8mes de refroidissement des salles de serveurs) sont particuli\u00e8rement dangereux, car ils sont des sources directes de GES. Entre 2014 et 2020, les \u00e9missions de GES provenant des appareils \u00e9lectroniques et de leurs d\u00e9chets ont augment\u00e9 de 53 %. D&rsquo;ici 2030, on estime que 852 tonnes m\u00e9triques de compos\u00e9s de CO2 seront \u00e9mises par les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques.<\/p>\n<p>Outre les \u00e9missions de GES, les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques contribuent \u00e9galement au changement climatique par d&rsquo;autres moyens, moins imm\u00e9diats. La destruction d&rsquo;appareils \u00e9lectroniques, par exemple, augmente la demande. Il en r\u00e9sulte un besoin accru d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie et de ressources naturelles pour la fabrication et le transport de nouveaux appareils.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Minimiser l&rsquo;impact environnemental des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bien que les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques aient d\u00e9j\u00e0 caus\u00e9 d&rsquo;importants dommages \u00e0 l&rsquo;environnement, nous avons encore la possibilit\u00e9 d&#8217;emp\u00eacher que ces dommages ne s&rsquo;aggravent. La collaboration de plusieurs parties cl\u00e9s sera n\u00e9cessaire pour avoir un impact significatif, mais voici quelques points de d\u00e9part essentiels.<\/p>\n<p>Tout d&rsquo;abord, l&rsquo;allongement de la dur\u00e9e de vie des produits \u00e9lectroniques doit \u00eatre une priorit\u00e9 absolue. Les recherches montrent qu&rsquo;en augmentant la dur\u00e9e de vie des appareils \u00e9lectroniques de 50 \u00e0 100 %, on peut att\u00e9nuer jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 la moiti\u00e9 des \u00e9missions de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre. Les fabricants doivent donner la priorit\u00e9 \u00e0 la r\u00e9duction \u00e0 la source, \u00e0 la capacit\u00e9 de r\u00e9paration, \u00e0 la remise \u00e0 neuf et \u00e0 la r\u00e9utilisation.<\/p>\n<p>Il est \u00e9galement important de sensibiliser le public au recyclage des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques. Alors que les Nations unies notent que les d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques sont l&rsquo;un des flux de d\u00e9chets dont la croissance est la plus rapide au monde, le public n&rsquo;est toujours pas sensibilis\u00e9 \u00e0 cette question. Moins de 20 % sont officiellement recycl\u00e9s, mais un recyclage ad\u00e9quat pourrait r\u00e9duire de mani\u00e8re significative l&rsquo;impact des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques sur le changement climatique.<\/p>\n<p>Lorsque les entreprises, les municipalit\u00e9s et les consommateurs unissent leurs efforts, les appareils informatiques peuvent \u00eatre remis \u00e0 neuf pour prolonger leur dur\u00e9e de vie, ce qui permet non seulement d&rsquo;\u00e9viter qu&rsquo;ils ne finissent dans les d\u00e9charges, mais aussi de r\u00e9duire la demande de nouvelles technologies, dont la fabrication acc\u00e9l\u00e8re encore le changement climatique. Et m\u00eame si les appareils sont en fin de vie et ne peuvent pas \u00eatre remis \u00e0 neuf, un recyclage ad\u00e9quat permet d&rsquo;\u00e9viter que des mat\u00e9riaux dangereux ne se retrouvent dans les d\u00e9charges, car nombre d&rsquo;entre eux peuvent \u00eatre extraits et r\u00e9utilis\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Enfin, les l\u00e9gislateurs doivent adopter des politiques et fournir des ressources pour permettre un recyclage ad\u00e9quat des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques. Ils doivent notamment tenir les fabricants et les autres entreprises responsables des pratiques de recyclage des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques, et concevoir et mettre en \u0153uvre des programmes efficaces de recyclage des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques.<\/p>\n<p>Quelle que soit son importance, la bonne gestion des d\u00e9chets \u00e9lectroniques a un impact positif sur l&rsquo;environnement.
