Many myths circulate when it comes to which steps are sufficient for safely destroying a hard drive and minimizing the risk of a data breach. Here are a few of the most common myths about <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/whats-the-difference-between-naid-membership-naid-certification\/\">hard drive destruction<\/a>, as well as the truth behind them.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth 1: If destruction guidelines don\u2019t apply to your business, you shouldn\u2019t worry about them.<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/case-studies\/how-quantum-works-with-retailers\/\">Data destruction<\/a> protocols vary based on the nature of a business and its location. The EU has a set of data destruction regulations under the <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/how-canadas-privacy-laws-are-being-updated-what-it-could-mean-for-the-public-sector\/\">General Data Protection Regulation<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/gdpr-implications-for-data-handling-in-north-america\/\">GDPR<\/a>). In the U.S., the FTC\u2019s Disposal Rule applies to banks and other lenders, law firms, landlords, employers, government agencies, and any company or organization that pulls credit reports. This rule calls for the proper elimination of private information to minimize the risk of unauthorized access or use. U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/case-studies\/how-quantum-works-with-healthcare-providers\/\">healthcare organizations<\/a> must also comply with HIPAA, which calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/a-guide-to-erasure-vs-degaussing-vs-shredding\/\">shredding<\/a> or otherwise destroying paper documents and destroying or erasing electronic files.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether any data destruction laws apply to your business, it\u2019s best to act as if your company could have personal data in its possession. There\u2019s always the possibility you could have personally identifiable information, such as customers\u2019 phone numbers, addresses, or other data on your devices. Acting as if this information could be present and following proper data destruction protocols could protect your business against serious legal and reputational ramifications.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth 2: Your business is unlikely to be a target for theft.<\/h2>\n<p>Many small business owners fall for this myth. You may not think your business would have information that would be attractive to a cybercriminal, but it\u2019s impossible to know what information they might want or how they\u2019d use it.
