Each year, the Circular Innovation Council hosts its annual <a href=\"https:\/\/wrwcanada.com\/en\/about\/waste-reduction-week-canada\">Waste Reduction Week<\/a> to engage citizens in positive changes that minimize waste. This year, the campaign celebrates its 20th anniversary and will be held from October 18th through the 24th. Here\u2019s a closer look at what the week entails, especially in terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/making-sense-of-carbon-credits\/\">e-waste<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Focus of Waste Reduction Week<\/h2>\n<p>In the two decades for which it\u2019s been running, the goals of <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/how-quantum-supports-waste-reduction-week\/\">Waste Reduction Week<\/a> have been to educate and empower Canadians to become more environmentally conscious in their choices and behaviours. A primary objective of the campaign is to <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/the-virtues-of-reuse-over-recycling\/\">reduce<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/the-environmental-impact-of-cloud-computing-data-storage\/\">environmental impact<\/a> of waste, including climate change, the use and depletion of natural resources, and water pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Much has changed since the campaign\u2019s inception 20 years ago, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ept.ca\/2020\/11\/new-e-waste-regulation-reduces-electronic-waste\/\">provincial legislation<\/a> for the management of e-waste in Canada. With this in mind, the theme of Waste Reduction Week in 2021 is Then \u2013 Now \u2013 Future. While it recognizes and celebrates the environmental efforts that have already been made and how we handle e-waste now, it also aims to encourage more environmentally beneficial ideas and solutions to reduce our environmental impact in the future.<\/p>\n<h2>The Importance of E-Waste Reduction<\/h2>\n<p>Each day of Waste Reduction Week will focus on a specific target area. E-waste is featured mid-week on Wednesday, October 20th. As a growing problem in Canada and across the globe, e-waste continues to be an area of <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/blog\/6-considerations-corporate-asset-disposition-quick-guide-professionals\/\">recycling<\/a> that demands attention from organizations and consumers alike. Last year, the world reached a total <a href=\"https:\/\/quantumlifecycle.com\/en_CA\/case-studies\/how-quantum-works-with-the-vaping-industry\/\">electronic waste<\/a> volume of <a href=\"https:\/\/wrwcanada.com\/en\/get-involved\/resources\/e-waste-themed-resources\/e-waste-facts\">53.6 million metric tonnes<\/a> \u2013 an increase of 21% over five years, with just 17.4% of e-waste being recycled.<\/p>\n<p>This segment of waste includes unwanted electronic equipment such as laptops, phones, and tablets, as well as batteries and cables.
